Resume Tips – What NOT to Include

Your resume is a streamlined list of what you’ve experienced and achieved in relation to what you’re applying for. It is perhaps the single most important piece of paper you’ll ever send out, as it gets your foot in the door with the potential employer. Make sure you have all the essentials in check. In order to make sure you’re resume is doing its job properly, always avoid the following:

Things you should always leave out:

Resume Tip #1: Life’s experiences that happened a long time ago are irrelevant. If you can’t speak to Collegiate or Internship experience, then you won’t be taken as seriously by the employer as you might be hoping.

Resume #2: Include a ‘Skills’ section to display your areas of competency. For example, if you’re a social media wizard, go ahead and say you’re proficient in the art of Facebook and Twitter. Don’t just put down something general  like ‘media.’ There are a lot of different kinds of media, and if you want to be taken seriously you have to get more specific.

Resume #3: Refrain from  filling up your resume with paragraphs of explanations about your experience. If  you have to write down a ton of words to explain yourself then you’re doing it wrong, – less is more. Write out short, effective lists with efficient and powerful verbs i.e  have you ever helped someone create and organize list of contacts for a specific purpose? Well, then, you might better say: “developed a database.’

Resume #4: One spelling error is all it takes to blow your chances. Considering what you’re going up against, be careful and proofread, proofread, proofread.
